David Otieno

Join the fight against HIV/AIDS and together we shall overcome. Karateng' is our Community. We live and work here. If you sponsor our projects, we show you what tasks your funds do each week. We also provide you with a financial statement each month. We are accountable. That is why we are successful

Eliud Omollo
I am David Otieno. I am a born again Christian. I work for SADP as Executive Manager and Social Worker We are very grateful to our sponsor, The Sule Foundation of Dayton, Ohio.
I am Eliud Omollo. I am also a born again Christian. I work for SADP as Finance Manager and Social Worker.

Sule Assisting Development Project SADP) was started in 1999 and it is established in Karateng', Maseno Division of Kisumu District, Kenya. The driving force behind its establishment was the need to assist orphans to get education. Other community needs were icorporated into the program later to counter rejection, stigma and discrimination that many women, men and children suffer after a positive HIV diagnosis and by extension after the death of a spouse or parents.

Our Mission.

SADP is an AIDS support Community Based Organization (CBO) that strives to care, support and empower Orphans, people with HIV/AIDs, and their families to enable them live more wholesome lives.

Our Belief.

At SADP, we believe among others:-

  • Thatabstinence is the most effective way of avoiding HIV infection.
  • That those who are infected can lead quality wholesome lives with appropriate food and care.
  • That persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS can participate meaningfully and productively in the social and economic affairs of the community and the country at large.
  • That peer education among the youths in schools and within the community is another positive way of creating awareness in the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
  • That it is by working with other stakeholders that we shall maximize benefits to our target population.
  • That the awareness campaign must be maintained continuously to achieve the objectives.
  • That by social workers living within the target community and practicing what they preach, it impacts positive social changes in that communuty.

Success of SADP.

SADP started its work in Nyabera village in 1999. Initially the support was for a select number of orphans education and welfare only. But it became apparent very quickly that there was a larger fundamental issue that needed to be addressed. The family nucleus was missing. Kids were running homes. People were continuing to die daily. The few remaining adults in the village felt overwhelmed and unable to cope with the situation. There was misinformation everywhere about the disease. We needed to give the community the correct information. That was when we approached our sponsors from Dayton, Ohio and they decided to employ two social workers to help the community cope with the situation. They also bought us a motorcycle to help with our transportation in the village. As a result of this, we were able to extend our mandate to cover all of Karateng’ and some adjacent jurisdictions. Karateng' comprises 15 villages, namely: Agulu, Burlowo,Kanyamedha, Nyawita, Ong'iyo, Nyabera, Nyametsa, Rabuor, Nyamboyo, Mbakoromo, Mirunda, Mbalawandu, Maseno, Marera, Kodongo.

In addition to our earlier objective, our project has now evolved to become an umbrella organization that supports other CBO’s in the area. We provide weekly HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns and free condoms to the community at large and all the micro-enterprises in Karateng’. We also provide weekly HIV/AIDS education to ten schools.

Feedbacks from the Community:

Many people from this community seek us out to tell us that they appreciate our work within the community. They like the fact that we live with them in the village and we are approachable any time, day or night. They say other groups from the city come around every once in a while to run one seminar then they are gone. But we are different because our service is constant. For instance the 10 schools in Maseno division know that we are at their school to conduct peer education at a scheduled time once every week.

Condom distribution
Youth groups in this area always appreciate our work in the community as they get readily available information and IEC materials whenever they visit our office or when we visit them during our weekly meetings.

School head teachers have always congratulated us for the good teachings that we give to their pupils during peer education sessions. This has always motivated us and encouraged us to even work harder for a better SADP.

Our Services

Our services to the community includes:-

  • Orphans support and welfare program

SADP supports and cares for a total of seventy (70) orphans. Many of these orphans are in primary schools while the rest are in both secondary and colleges.

We support them by providing them with uniforms, school fees and basic health cares.

  • HIV/AIDS awareness campaign Programs.

We conduct awareness campaign within the community through peer education in ten primary schools within Maseno Division. We talk to and distribute IEC materials and condoms to different groups within the community in an attempt to reduce rates of HIV infection.

  • Income Generating Activities Programme.

Our experiences in dealing with care and support of those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS clearly demonstrate that the infection is maturing and its dynamics highly visible. In retrospect, intervention must equally employ dynamic strategies towards prevention, care, support and mitigation.

Karateng’ is a poor community with unemployment hovering around 70%. It is important that even as we create these health awareness, and assist kids education, that we also find ways to help them become self reliant.

owino sunflower garden
At SADP, we have been assisting the existing micro-enterprises with health education, Condoms, better administration of their money.

We have also just recently planted seeds on our brand new 10 acre sunflower farm. We are paying local hands for labor, some of whom are our own orphans who are no longer in school.

Here Mr. Owino, the Micro-enterprise Manager is inspecting the recently ploughed sunflower acreage just before seeding.

  • Seminary College sponsorship.

The Sule Foundation in Dayton, Ohio also sponsored through us two seminarians. One has recently graduated as a priest from Seminary school and another one will be graduating in 2007.

We are currently looking for funds to employ the priest who recently graduated to add more spiritual element to our crusade in Karateng’. Moreover, there is no local priest for any of the three Anglican churches in Karateng’ so we hope to have him double in that capacity also.

Our future goals.

  • Be able to sponsor and support many orphans infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. There are about 5,000 orphans within Karateng’ needing some form of immediate assistance.
  • Be able to teach others to duplicate our very successful model to other areas.
  • Provide medical care to PLWHA’s using both conventional and alternative medicines.
  • Provide economic support through promotion of income generating activities for women, older orphans and foster parents.
  • To establish Home Based Care Programme to PLWHA,s in the community.
  • To establish a Library for use by everyone from the village. If we can have one which is connected to the Internet, it will be a tremendous help to the school going children in our village.
  • To establish a health Center in Nyabera. Currently, Nyabera and Mbakoromo villagers have to walk more than 4 miles to the closest health center.

Conclusion:

  • Our services are quite unique for this age, being a professionally run CBO, headquartered and living in the rural village. This has given us a great opportunity to understand and address the causes and effects of HIV/AIDS in a rural Luo community over the seven years of our existance with such a success that would have been difficult otherwise . We now know which approaches work best. We also know that the community needs certain enhencements in their welfare to move forward. These enhencements require funds that we do not have at present. It is our hope that working through Luocome we shall be able to get funding to address these issues.
  • SADP believes that in the long run, it is better to “teach the youth to fish” and not give them handouts. Funds specifically geared towards micro-enterprise development will develop youth entrepreneurs in the community while also assisting their growth in administering their ventures to succeed.
