Re: God's view of greatness

Have you ever given a serious thought on the subject of greatness?

It seems to me that there are two contradictory views of greatness-God's view and man's view. We, human beings tend to associate greatness with among other things riches, possessions, education, outward appearance, social status in the community, and surprisingly, at the church.

Since each one of us in our own ways want to be seen as great, we strive to have that which will earn us some kind of greatness. I guess you have heard it said elsewhere that: " I wish I would become great like so and so." Many people have gone into their graves having not been able to attain this desire. Pole(our sympathies)

Our God on the other hand equates greatness with humility, faith, trust, and of a teachable spirit. Those that God deemed as such throughout the centuries were highly honored and commended. Here are some of them:

Deuteronomy 34:10 And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.

Proverbs 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

Luke 7:28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptism: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

Mathew 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

It's rather unfortunate that while the earthly greatness makes one feel good, acceptable, and sometimes almost worshiped, it's short lived. On a positive side, although those that heaven considers great might be despised and looked down upon here on earth, at the end, it will be well with them.

I guess the question is, "which kind of greatness are you and I chasing? Earthly or heavenly?

Just a thought.
