DIENYA MIXED DAY SECONDARY SCHOOL
P. O. BOX 164, NG’IYA

LOCATED AT:  East Dienya Sub location

West Gem Location

Wagai Division

Siaya District

Nyanza Province

Starting period  – January 2004

Background Information
a) Kathomo Welfare Association having been in existence in major towns in Kenya with its base in Kathomo village. The Nairobi office had and still has its major objectives as: improvement of the socio-economic empowerment of its people. Create an enabling environment for its people to access quality affordable education within a walking distance, access to safe water for both domestic and minor irrigation development at home based including access to safe disposal of faecal matter (sanitary facilities) among others.

In the 1970’s the Kathomo Welfare Association embarked on rigorous educational set up within Kathomo namely: Development of Nyagondo mixed day secondary school which is complete and operational, the development of Ulamba village Polytechnic which is complete and operational, the development of Apuoyo mixed day secondary school which admitted the first intake this year with a wonderful positive start and the development of two classrooms , administration block and is on going with an aim of admitting form I classes in the year 2004. Initially Nyagondo was supposed to be for girls and Dienya for Boy but that can be organized at a later date.

The Kathomo Welfare Group at home together with the people found it necessary to move faster and start the Dienya Mixed Day secondary school come the year 2004.

PRESENT STATUS
The poverty level of the community surrounding the school is above 60%, which is the district average position. With the Narc government introducing free Primary education, there are so many pupils in standard eight doing Kenya Certificate of Primary Education this year. This means that there will be fewer classes for Form 1 in the region thus no further education for many pupils thus increase in poverty instead of trying to create wealth and reduce poverty as a government policy.
