EDUCATION IN NYANZA AND POLITICS

Between 1960 and 1980 Nyanza Province was the epitome of education in Kenya and that is why we now have prominent politicians who are well educated.

After 1980 the standards started dropping and as of now we can not claim any credit in giving our children good education. Two reasons:

1)      Poverty:- The poverty in this region has immensely contributed to the poor performance in schools because teachers no longer spend time in schools teaching pupils but use classroom time doing their businesses to make ends meet. On the other hand the poverty in the region has hindered some parents to take their children to school. Our schools are not well equipped like schools in other regions especially for the 8-4-4 education system.

2)      Politics:- Our leaders (politicians) have only taken one line of their leadership (politicking) and ignored other areas like education. The politicians in Nyanza have chosen to be silent on education matters even if the standards are dropping. Every year when the National Examinations results come out we see very few of our sons and daughters from selected schools amongst the top 100. No leader has ever bothered to find out the problem. Only recently Mrs. Idda Odinga raised her concern on the dropping standards in Nyanza and actually suggested that all stakeholders should do something about it. None of our political leaders has come forward in support of Idda’s concern.

I want to tell my fellow Kenyans from Nyanza that if nothing is done now we are going to experience a very serous leadership vacuum after our current crop of leader have gone to pass. We need continuity in leadership. Let us ask ourselves who is going to be the Railas, Kajwangs, Orengos, Nyong’os and Orie-rogos of tomorrow?

What then can we do to avert this?

There is only one thing we Nyanza people can do. To set the agenda for those vying for political leadership in next year’s general elections from the region. Let us not go by political euphoria of TOSHA but elect those leaders who will be able to bring back the region to where it was before 1980 both socially and economically.

a)      Let those seeking for votes tell us what agenda they have on EDUCATION

b)      Let them tell us the agendas they have for us in store for POVERTY ERADICATION
