FUNERAL IN NYANZA HAS BECOME RISK POLITICAL FORUM AND BATTLE FIELD
By Leo Odera Omolo

Bitter exchange of words and issuing of threats have become synonymous at funeral places inside Luo-Nyanza at time the gathering is posing serious breach of peace.

There is alarming increase of acts of political thuggery and violence at the funeral places everywhere in NyanzaProvince . The situation is becoming a matter of great concern to the law abiding and peace loving Wananchi .

The incidences of such violence is almost making funeral places a no go area. The life threatening confrontations by rival politicians especially when two groups opposed to each other met at funeral home.

In one incident the former Permanent Secretaries in the Ministry of Information and Communications. Eng. James Rege was at the weekend barred from attending a funeral at his Kanjira Villlage home turf.

Rege had turned up to attend the funeral of Mrs. Consolata Atieno Ngoge who was buried at her Kanjira Sub- Location home in West Karachuonyo. Angry youth stopped Rege and tried to prevent him from parking his car in the compound where the funeral ceremony was being conducted.

The rowdy and unruly youth were heard shouting at the top of their voices that Eng. Rege is a Narc Kenya mole in Karachuonyo and as such they wished him to stay away.

The funeral home was only a stone throw from that of Eng. Rege and that of the incumbent Karachuonyo MP Dr. Paul Adhu Awiti whose stars seemed to be on the rise.

Rege however vehemently denied that he was a Narc Kenya member, but strong rumours making the round in Karachuonyo is that he is a political associate  of the Foreign Minister Raphael Tuju with whom they had briefly served with together in the Information Ministry. Tuju is a Marce Kenya torch bearer in Nyanza.

It is said that both men had lived together in the United States where they had established several joint business ventures. It is also being alleged that it was Tuju who had influenced the appointment of Eng. Rege as PS in his former Ministry and the two men had good rapport.

The crowd at the funeral home which was obviously acting in favour  Dr. Awiti pleaded with the two men who are nephews to shake hands with  one another   as a sign of peace and reconciliation.

Other mourners were heard screaming at Rege calling him names which others did not mince their words but shouted to their loudest saying  the former PS as a "traitor".

Dr. Awiti, however warned the electorate to beware of those opportunists who are out to take advantage of them.He asked them to remain vigilant and steadfast in LDP and ODM-K."You should be on the look out for those dishing out money for the purpose of undermining Luo Unity".

Rumors that Narc Kenya had recently dispatched its agents loaded with lots of money to confuse the electorate in Luo Nyanza and to take the advantage of their poor living standards which is below the poverty line.

In Uriri constituency in Migori District police timely intervention to save what looked like bloody confrontation between the supporters of the incumbent MP Herman Odhiambo Omamba and an aspiring candidate in the same constituency at a funeral home.

The incident occurred at the home of the late civic leader Coun Auma Akon'go who was buried at his Kakremba home in East Kanyamkago location in Uriri Division in Migori District. Several aspirants for the Uriri parliamentary seat turned up for the occasion but rowdy supporters of one of the prospective candidates Cyprian Ojwang Omolo a wealthy Nairobi based businessman confronted those of the incumbent Herman Odhiambo Omamba .

Each of the two had donated a bull to be slaughtered at the funeral. Omamba had earlier realized that the bull to be slaughtered was smaller and that his opponent had offered bigger than his, he hurriedly rushed back and replaced the smaller one with one which matched the size of the bull donated by his rival. This raised tension by his rival and raised political temperature in the funeral home.

Omamba who had appointed himself as the master of ceremony had tried to block his opponents from addressing the mourners but was booed and heckled at. The mourners shouted demanding that he allow   other aspirants  to speak.

One aspirant Okoth Obado later caused a prolonged laughter when he challenged the ageing Omamba to seek the election as a member of the moribund Luo Council of elders instead of seeking for re-election to the parliament where he had done nothing for 12 years.

Both Omamba and Omolo struggled for the microphones but were only separated by police when they were about exchange blows.

Omolo had earlier severally criticized Omamba for having not properly prioritized the allocation of CDF fund.
