Nyachae's Circumcision and Luo Leadership (Revised)

January 8, 2007

By Consolata N Mutua

In the world of today many people are served in various fields by men from different places with different customs and cultures. In various institutions nobody dares to ask for the religion of the attendant or cultural practice. Which then tells you that service rendered is what matters more than anything else. Spiritual and physical circumcision in leadership and work place used to matter centuries back when people were primitive. Whether it matters, wisdom is the goal of satisfactory leadership.

Majorities are still living in the old days. The dark days are over and education has enlightened many in various fields of life. Circumcision and leadership are very parallel, they can both work at the same time or one can work without the other. Wisdom is leadership while circumcision of any kind is for identity.

In the 2002 elections, if Simeon Nyachae had won the presidency then clearly it tells you that he was going to be discriminative to the Luo community because of their cultural practice. The other vital question is why does his family have a Luo physician if he doesn't want any Luo president? Why did he allow his children to be taught by Luo teachers if he has a low opinion about them? Why is he paid a salary and allowances some of which is paid by Luo tax payers if he doesn't recognize Luo Cultural practice? If asked to fund Luo youths to be circumcised under his bill will he pay for them all no matter the number if he is concerned about their traditional culture?

Africans contradict themselves at times, children are taught in schools without parents asking those teachers about their private life, doctors offer services without patients asking anything about their underpants. But in politics some primitive people talk about it. Among many I am obligated to ask why they don't ask in schools where their children attend, or offices where they are offered services or in hospitals where they go to seek treatment. Why is Nyachae reading news papers, listening radio and TV broadcasts done by Luo anchors if he doesn't want them in high office?

The same respect you offer a human being no matter their color, tribe, nationality, gender, race or religion, is what should be applied in any political office of the land. Wisdom and leadership is more effective than circumcision and leadership. If a politician is able to attain any given political office in politics, if he has wisdom, he can hold any political office in the land regardless of his underpants. Luos have not asked about Nyachae's land grabbing in Kisii town.

In the modern world, people should be academically circumcised than tribally circumcised. It is a practical explanation that had Simeon Nyachae become president, Luo civil servants could not have come anywhere near his office; that is politically wrong and undermining his integrity. Then it tells you that Simeon Nyachae cannot approve marriage of his children to a Luo. Further, it shows that Nyachae can invest in Luo territory and make business from them but undermine their practice while making profits from them. Deny this!

Who says Raila should apologize to Jimmy Angwenyi and his fellow supporters for reminding Nyachae what he said during the constitutional referendum? Is there anything wrong in reminding somebody? That is why we have historians to keep record. Their demonstrations a few days ago was just hastily instigated to sway the supporters sympathetic to Raila, had they made it clear then they could have had a parallel demonstration to counter. Jimmy Angwenyi's election campaign is on the edge ready to fall off, but before he falls and is kicked out of parliament he wants to fall with other politicians. " If the tree is falling let it fall by itself". The demonstration by some of the Kisii MPS is trying to use the media to revive their falling digits in their various constituencies. That is why they used Kibaki government to sack people who are going to oppose them in Gusiiland.

End
