RAILA KICKS OFF HIS BID FOR THE PRESIDENCY IN ITESO.

BY SHEM KOSSE.

The Orange Democratic Movement(ODM) leading light, Raila Amollo Odinga has kicked off his campaign for the topmost seat in the land, the presidency of the Republic of Kenya,in Teso District.

The Langata legislator who told the residents he was gunning for the presidency to save Kenyans from extreme poverty they are currently undergoing, was flanked by a galaxy of Mps.

Sospeter Ojamong(Teso), Ayiecho Olweny(muhoroni) and Paddy Ahenda(Kasipul Kabondo), accompanied the Langata Mp as he was making several brief stop overs, adressing well attended rallies, stretching from Kangara, Moding, Angurai, Kekalet, Amagoro, Kamolo, Simba Chai, Adungosi and Busia.

Raila noted with concern the cost of living which has shot up while the current president looks the other way. "The cost of living has gone up while the president has been in power, the poor are suffering more and this can be stopped if he is shown the door", observed Odinga.

He revisited his infamous slogan of "Kibaki Tosha" saying it has now been substituted with "Kibaki Toka", to the amusement of the large crowds that turned up.

Mr Odinga not only took issue with the government for backtracking on its election pledges, in the run up to 2002 transitional elections, but also claimed that the youths have been ignored and major appointments in the government are made favouring people from one region only.

At one time Raila had to intervene to cool the tempers of the furious crowd who were heckling the area Mp, Mr. Ojamong, whom they claimed is yet to deliver on his election promises since they elected him.

Songs of praises and dances showered the Odinga' s entourage as it criss-crossed the districts' political terrain.

In terms of economic development, he said, Kenya should be at the same wavelength as Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. "It is a shame of the highest order for our country to share economic category with neighboring countries like Uganda and Ethiopia", he said.

Raila promised to restore and uphold democracy and good governance when elected as the president in the coming general elections, later this year.
