KISUMU HAWKERS ULTIMATELY AXED OFF THE STREET.

BARELY three weeks after the takeover of the four storey building, situated along the prestigious Oginga Odinga street, opposite National bank , of the former Kisumu town west Mp, the late Joab Henry Omino, through an auction, by an Asian tycoon Mr. Gilani, tens of thousands of hawkers selling their wares in its premises, finally confirmed their worst fears: they have been evicted.

Contingents of armed city council askaris and the police, were impeccably deployed by Gilani, working in cahoots with the council, to execute the eviction which has hitherto sparked off a mixed reaction across the political spectrum.

Some of the politicians, questioned why is it that all the properties Gilani has been buying, have neither been advertised nor the rates it owes the council made public prior to the sale, arguing that there is more than meets the eye over Gilani's properties buying spree.

The adamant, though crestfallen hawkers and boda boda taxis fraternity, continued to play hide and seek game, with the heavily armed askaris. The operation was webbed to cover the entire Oginga Odinga street.

Gilani, who owns chains of properties in prime areas of lakeside city, Kisumu, is largely known for his intolerance towards hawkers who dare operate business in or near his business premises and buildings.

Majority of the hawkers interviewed vowed to move to court to obtain an injunction, to bar the city council. "We have to resort to legal means. The council must come with a clear cut policy to carter for our interests", echoed an embittered hawker. "the council resolution is akin to jungle laws" added another.

The city council, in the recent past, passed a resolution to rid the Central Business District (CBD) of hawkers.

By the time of going to the press, hundreds of watchful askaris, in the name of enforcing council resolutions, positioned themselves strategically, keeping round the clock surveillance, purposely, to stifle any move by the hard-line stance hawkers, to retreat to the street.
