Purpose of the visit to the Yala Swamp Project
  

  • To see how wet lands can be turned to be the best.

  • To get inspired by the project.

  • To see and suggest areas of replication of the farming system elsewhere in Nyanza.

  • To look further for areas of collaboration for improving standards of living in Nyanza.

  • To suggest methods for capacity building for members of ELDERS.
      

The situation LEDEC would like to see in Nyanza
  

  • Reduction in prevalent poverty.

  • Investment in Agriculture.

  • Education provided for the Youth.

  • Economic Empowerment.

  • Reduce the prevalent death rate( low life expectancy).

  • Economic self reliance.


   Contribution by Mr. Calvin Burgess at the meeting

  • Mr. Burgess concentrated on explaining the three youth training centers that he will soon start, each accommodating more than two thousand children. Each unit will be about 100 acres.

  •  The training units will consist of facilities like classrooms, dormitories, amphitheaters swimming pools, recreational facilities e.t.c.

  •  Counselors will be taken care of at these camps.
      The purpose is to improve education level of the youth, change their moral attitude, provide basic skills and provide health programmes.

  •   Cooperatives should be encouraged in farming

  •   Education in vital for future development

  •   Luos in diaspora are willing to help but better through streamlined institutions rather than though individuals

  •   A big conference on development likely to be organized sometime in June 2007

  •   A food crisis is looming and thus the need for Kenyans to intensify food
     production.

  •  LEDEC is involved in improving agricultural output, improving health condition adequate provision of education, promoting desirable cultural practices, improving environmental e.t.c.

  •  There are adequate specialists as human resources who are underutilized that can be useful.

  •  Capacity building for LEDEC members would be a sure way of changing the mindset.

  • Change was required and so the need for social re-engineering.

  • LEDEC can have consultation with people to achieve the change anticipated.

  • Members of LEDEC need to be catalysts

  •    Referance was made to land consolidation which have turned back to land subdivision into economic units

  •   The situation should be reversed

  • Reference was made to the tiger states in East Asia that practice something similar to dominion farm.

  • We can replicate it in other parts of Nyanza

  • Dominion farm can be a nucleus from where others can be educated. Elders be used as a bridge to reach people.

  • LEDEC represents the Luo Elders who are knowledgeable and can educate others on economic development

  • Thanked Mr. Calvin Burgess and his team for welcoming LEDEC to Yala swamp Project and being so educative

  • Suggested further collaboration and cooperation.

  • Prayed for God's guidance on the good work so that people can be more enlightened.
