RE: PERFORMING ARTS FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE

The Misango Arts Ensemble is a vibrant entertainment education entity based in Kisumu Kenya . The organization specializes in the use of theatre for social transformation as a process of rallying  support to change the situation for better.

Theatre / drama is most exiting method for message dissemination and thus makes it a powerful social tool for the empowerment for the disempowered members of the society. The performing arts has the greatest potential for providing voices to the disempowered giving them voices to air their views against injustices meted out to them.

To promote good governance, the Misango Arts Ensemble is producing a powerful classical African drama titled "MUNTU" by Joe De Graft to be presented regionally and beyond. Obat Masira presented "MUNTU" in Britain in 1986 -- A joint production by the Ramogi Writers and Drama Society ( Kisumu , Kenya ) and Arts Opportunity Theatre ( Bristol, England ). Ultimately MUNTU was presented at the W.O.M.A.D festival (World of Music Arts Dance Festival) in Bristol England in 1986.

Our objective in restaging the production in three fold.
(1)    To use the medium of performing arts to prick the conscience of Kenyan Society during the electioneering period.
(2)    To draw the attention to the injustices, poor governance, widespread graft and lack of political vision and mission
(3)    To rally Kenyans around the need to uphold justice, good governance and therefore create a culture of integrity (moral culture).

The play tackles various social issues affecting the African continent since creation to date i.e. misrule, abuse of human rights, corruption, greed and exploitation in a subtle and satirical way. The production requires a cast of 25 and 15 production team. Thus a very expensive theatrical venture but quite rewarding in terms of public political learning process.

The purpose of this letter therefore is to seek partners to support the venture. We hereby appeal to well wishers for support.   Attached is the "MUNTU" critique and synopsis.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully
