Re: Nothing works in Kenya, despite all the denials

Odhaimbo Oketch,

Habari ya masiku Ndugu,

I have read your excellent piece like I have been reading all the other mails you post.

I have come to the conclusion that those of us who seriously want Kibaki out have run out of ideas.

In politics, let actions speak not arguments. The chief campaigners of Mr. Mwai Kibaki are Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka. Mr. Kibaki has not done anything new to make him, look good. The problem is that the oppositionists in ODM are so hopelessly un strategic. They spend all the time arguing with Kibaki and destroying their credibility.

They then quickly create a doubt in the minds of Kenyans and Kenyans begin to ask questions like if so and so is doing this kind of thing without power, what will he do if he was to capture power as president?

The people then develop doubts about what the alternatives to Kibaki real are.

A friend recently asked an ODM presidential candidate why Kenyans should vote for him, as usual the answer is because Kibaki has done the tribal things and failed to achieve all the things you have outlined herein. Of course that is not convincing. People want leaders who show that they believe in process and integrity even in the opposition. The chaos in ODM are so serious and they are casting the leaders (I am told they are called Luminaries) in bad light. But they will not accept it.

NCEC was the engine of the opposition coalition of 2002 and we were operating on certain assumptions. One of them was that Moi was so dislikable and Kenyans were in a mood to teach him a lesson. And so Uhuru was taught a lesson for Moi to hear and see.

Can I be this candid- Kenyans do not Kibaki as much as you think! And then the opposition are indeed doing the campaign for Mr. Kibaki. I feel so sad about this.

Let me share this, ODM has not demonstrated that they are better leaders and managers than the mediocre Kibaki leaders. They are so immature in the management of processes that they lose seriousness. Who are they fooling? The way Kalonzo has been conducting himself is so immature, all of us know Balala is a pretender. Nazlim Umar is a joke (Nazlin to be Kenya’s President? Are you serious? Then of course there is my dear friend Julia, and then the way Mudavadi, Raila , Uhuru and Raila have mismanaged the political process!

My recommendation
  1. All the ODM guys should quickly overcome the referendum ecstasy and plan for elections 2007. There is no Wako draft on the table.
  2. Throw out of the ODM ranks sycophants and campaigners and bring in hard nosed strategists. With great respect, My friend Odhiambo Oketch falls in the categories of campaigners for Raila, not even ODM and the country does not require them yet. Wanted is a team of strategies who capable of asking difficult questions like;
-          How May ODM lose the 2007 elections? What should be done to deal with this?
-          What may make Kibaki win elections? What does ODM do to stop this curse from befalling the nation again?
In all honesty and as some one who works with these ODM guys at another level, there are no known strategists in ODM but individuals who are dying to become the next MPs and councilors are therefore ready to align themselves and shout hardest to be recognized by their tribesman and therefore get nominated or appointed as a reward to their clownish behaviour. This phenomenon is the reason Kenyan has social workers for MPs and idiots for leaders. It is the reason why Kenya is headed for decline and stagnation. For God’s sake there is something with this with this. This is exactly the reason ODM is in trouble.

  1. These guys (ODM luminaries) should sober up, present a common vision to the nation as a political entity, put in place a credible Nomination process for both the Presidential and Parliamentary candidates, and show that they have Kenya at heart. Kenya is the second most conservative country after the US and that is important detail. Any body listening?
