THIS IS HON. NYACHAE

Let me tell you something about Hon Nyachae based on what I gathered while working at KBC office in Kisii town. I worked for KBC in Kisii as officer in-charge of KBC Kisii, Nyamira, Gucha and Transmara districts from January 1997 to December 2000 before being transferred to North Rift where I was stationed at Eldoret town.

Now, back to Mzee Nyachae. The man is arrogant, proud, verbally abusive, vocally inciting and potentially destructive. Two occasions in particular are worth review in regard to the foregoing attributes of Nyachae. In 1997 when President Moi visited Kisii to open ASK Kisii show, Nyachae verbally abused the then Nyanza PC Mr Joseph Kaguthi right in front of Moi. Nyachae called Kaguthi names accusing of all sorts of things including interferrance with development of Kisii. Everything was brought to a standstill when Nyachae put his tongue to use. He used words that should not be uttered in public.

In the same year during election campaign he did two things that made me understand him as dangerous. The preisdent was in Kisii campaigning and Nyachae was his pointman. He thought that he would be appointed vice president soon after election and was therefore upbeat with arrogance and violence. He used some gangs called Amachuma to attack and beat his opponents for Nyaribari Chache parliamentary seat. His opponent Mr Sospeter Arasa who happened to be his relative had his campaigners who were riding horses seeking votes for him blocked, brought down from their horses and beaten senseless. His other opponents Dr Sam Ogembo and Mr nyamweya were equally beaten up by Amachuma. In fact I knew everything because some of Amachuma and especially their Kisii town leader was my friend.

Sometime later when Hon Magara's brother who happened to be the MP for South Mugirango died, Nyachae and his supporters accused Moi's government of killing him and during funeral all sympathizers of Moi government who attended were given thorough beating by Amachuma as instructed by Nyachae. Prof Ongeri for instance was beaten until he took cover under a table. That time Nyachae had turned anti-Moi because his expectations of being appointed vice president never materialized.

By late 1998 clashes between Abagusii and Maasai had taken deadly turn along Gucha- Transmara border. It all began at Nyangusu market when after commotion a Maasai boy was beheaded when he was left behind by hisfriends fleeing the scene. The Maasai demanded that the head of the deceased be returned to them for burial saying that they would not bury a headless body. Abagusii adamantly refused to return the head and instead put it on display at Nyangusu. While all these took place many Gusii leaders allied to Nyachae used the incident to rally people against the government. They claimed that Maasai were being prepared by the government to attack Abagusii and for that reason Gusii warriors better known as Chinkororo were stationed along Gucha-Transmara border ready to fight what the Kisii politicians called an army of Maasai warriors assisted by adminstration police. Nyachae did the game so well that he was so popular.

However, the Maasai had a different agenda and strategy that was equally lethal. They were secretly organizing an attack. They struck at night and attacked a homestead leaving huge destruction- they left five members of one family beheaded!

You can guess the magnitude of the tension that engulfed Kisii town thereafter. The air in the town was so tense and the nights were so dark such that one could have easily be involved in an accident.

I was not spared. Many times I was questioned as to why Kalenjin government killed Abagusii in cold blood. I had to suspend numerous job related journeys and when I could not feel secure any more, I left Kisii town for home for sometimes until things cooled down abit.

In fact all the tension in Kisii town was the work of Amachuma, who happened to be Nyachae's enchmen and gangs of desperate jobless young men better known as Kebago. At the border of Maasai and Gusii, Chinkororo were in full supply! Everything worked according to Nyachae's plan.

Ruto and Magara attack is a good reminder of what took place in 1997-98. If nothing changes, expect 1997-98 repeat! Amachuma, Kebago and Chinkororo are ready to go to work!
