A UNIQUE VILLAGE WATER SUPPLY PROJECT IS LAUNCHED IN SUNA MIGORI.

By Leo Odera Omolo

A very unique project is shaping up in central Suna in Suba – West Division of Migori district.

A small local community at Nyamilu village which is located next to Bondo Nyironge Market have successfully launched water project which is now serving a community of about 4,000 people.

Nyamilu Water Project is estimated to have consumed close to Ksh. 5 million to complete its phase one project. And the villagers can now happily draw water at the various points, which is located in their door steps.

The project is the brainchild of Eng. Jared Ochieng’ Baraza a senior lecturer in Engineering at the Kenyatta University. Eng. Baraza who is a member of the World Wide Engineers Without Borders (EWB) had initiated the project in this remote village in the year 2003.

Each member of the Nyamilu Water Project had enrolled with 100/- membership fee and donors were sought for drilling of boreholes, water pipes, and a small generator engine which is supported by solar powered water pump.

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) assistance were sought from the University of Colorado and also in collaboration with other US Universities which sent student volunteers who came to Suna and camped at the project site. They used their own money which they had raised from various universities in drilling the borehole laying water pipes constructing the main reservoir tank and other accessories.

The last group engineers’ student contacts from the US which did the final touches left the site in July this year. They brought with them their own money, but hired the locals for manual work. They bought the materials used with their own money and were only accommodated by the local people.

The clean water which is now being pumped to the villages in 15 miles radius by way of gravity is expected to reduce the water borne diseases which are so common in the area by 60 per cent.

The engineers visiting student had constructed a large reservoir water tank with the capacity of 35,000 litres in which water is pumped in before being directed into the outlets channels across the villages where it is drawn at intervals according to the agreement by villagers.

The steering management committee has been established for the water rationing and also a committee to oversee the smooth supply and other problems to ensure its success.

The central reservoir tank is built next to Eng. Baraza’s home and so is the borehole which was drilled close to 900 meters deep. The survey and the project appraisal work was done and approved by the Ministry of Water Development and so is to survey. The volunteer work closely with the government to ensure transparency and accountability.

Ends.
