A VOICE OF REASON FROM MOUNT KENYA REGION

From: Gordon Teti

Kenya’s ruling elite is eactionary, all they talk about right now is Majimbo as a reaction to the ODM agenda, they are akin to the elite of Europe in the 19th century.

In his book the ‘Revolutions’ Allan Todd observed, “By 1848 political power throughout Europe was still in the hands of conservative or reactionary regimes mainly devoted to the interest of small privileged and disproportionately wealthy elites”

What Europe was in 19th century is what Kenya is currently.
Everything in Kenya revolves around the ruling elite and their wealthy masters. This explains why the Bomas draft, which reflected the ideals and aspirations of the people, was replaced by the Wako draft a creature of Mt.Kenya elite.

The ruling elite is totally driven by their interest and not by those of the people. Kenya’s elite are reactionaries and never revolutionary. Hence our governments since 1963 have all been reactionary.
The elite now behind PNU are driven by thirst for glory, grace and fabulous power that go with privileged positions in government and civil service.
All the presidential aspirants are all mesmerized by and attracted by the glory and the privilege that go with power.

They are never and have never been driven by the passion to serve and empower the people or their communities.
Every politician is struggling to establish his or her economic base. Every business near him is his and has nothing to do with the people. The people are mere voting machines who are used as political ladder and nothing less or more. Key and powerful politicians are seeking to expand family or personal business but not to empower their constituents or communities.

Indeed there is unwritten conspiracy by the ruling elite to colonize their communities and use them as slaves and political tools for their economic prosperity.
The elite from Central are busy mobilizing their communities to advance themselves. The emerging business empires are revolving around the families of the rich and the politically correct. The banks like Equity, Family or Mega will not make a difference for the ordinary masses.

This explains why Koigi Wa Mwere has been complaining that Kibaki’s government is for the rich not for the poor. It explains why hawkers basically from Central are harassed by the city askaris. They are brutally and ruthlessly dealt with mercilessly by a system controlled by their powerful kinsmen.

The same was true for Rift Valley mafia during Moi’s era. The masses suffered. Their economic institutions like KFA, KCC etc were destroyed deliberately to impoverish the masses and thus create a hopeless army of beggars and worshippers of the powerful. The mafia became a deity who had to be appeased, flattered and glorified. They became small gods and powerful influence on their people.
While in power the Rift Valley mafia did not pursue policies that spurred the aspiration of the people. Instead they created a generation that suffers from dependency syndrome.

A syndrome where begging was a way of life. MPs and ministers queued up at State House for handouts. In the villages the masses lined up to receive their share from their MPs.Call it patronage, it was a worship of free money.
In real terms Kenya’s elite are reactionary and simply in power to impoverish the masses and to perpetuate the oppression of the majority by a minority.
The political party that emerges or disappears is all in line with their interests. Parties and change of parties is a game to hoodwink the people.

Kenyans are simply political and economic baits. They are the worms used by fishermen to hook and entice their fish. Kenya’s GDP will not grow until a real revolution takes place. That time is not far.

The patients of the people have reached the end. Sooner than later the elite will be treated like the Tsars in former USSR.The Kenyan elite want to centralize power and control the resources of the nation from the centre. The revolutions of US led to the devolution of power from the centre to the regions and counties. The elite will not surrender such power easily.
The stability of America was a product of bloody civil and revolutionary wars. They fought revolutionary war in 1775-1783 where the army lost thousands of soldiers.

A country like Somalia will eventually attain stability as the elite totally surrenders their interests and seeks for the common good of Somalia. For Kenya nothing is expected to change until the interests of the elite are shattered by instability and anarchy. It is then that they will see sense.
If PNU wins the losers will naturally be the people of Kenya. They who are taxed and axed to make their rulers safe and sound.
Slowly by slowly though the masses are beginning to understand the dynamics that the ruling elite use to advance their economic and political interests.

Next year’s general election should mark the end of commercial politics to the politics of development and advancement of the people. It is when the people have a say in the running of systems in government that the GDP begins to grow. But as long as the City Askaris capture hawkers and destroy their wares, as long as the police torch pastoral homes and those of political incorrect community’s peace and development will be but a pipe dream.
