POWER OUTPUT TO BE INCREASED DURING CHOGMA SUMMIT IN KAMPALA

Kisumu,6/10/2007

By Leo Odera Omolo

Power generation at Owen Falls Dam will be increased to 200 megawatts from the current 145 megawatts in November

This will put a temporary stop to daytime load shedding countrywide, the Ugandan Ministry of Energy has disclosed.

A total of 312 megawatts of electricity will be generated from all sources of energy.

The thermal power plants of Lugogo and Kiira and Nambaale hydropower stations produce 145 megawatts. Their installed capacity is 380 megawatts.

Kiira Sugar works is also expected to generate 12 megawatts.

"We have agreed in principle with the directorate of water Development to increase hydropower production to meet the demand during the commonwealth meeting (CHOGM) next month," he said the Energy Minister Daudi Migereko.

The Minister explained that with the 312 megawatts, the daytime demand of between 260 and 280 megawatts would be satisfied. The peak demand is estimated at 400 megawatts.

The increased power generation will mean that load shedding will take place at night and only upcountry during the CHOGM period. The decision to increase power generation was reached after protracted negotiation between energy and technicians.

Negotiations were prompted by the increase in Lake Victoria water levels due to the current heavy rains.

Engineers monitoring the waters said the rains had raised the Lake’s waves from 1.33m in February 2006 to 1.134m today.

This means that the level of waters in Lake Victoria is close to one before the prolonged drought of 2006,when the lake level stood at around 1.134.7m

In 2006 the lake water dropped dramatically due to draught, excess water release for power generation and evaporation.

The Minister said emergency teams would be at strategic boosts to reality any breakdown.
