ANOTHER ELECTION CAMPAIGN VIOLENCE DEATH OCCURRED IN NYAKACH IN NYANZA PROVINCE AS FORMER MP ESCAPED LYNCHING.

By Leo Odera Omolo

The second election campaign death occurred on Thursday evening in Upper Nyakach Division of Nyando district.

A man was crushed by a vehicle owned by former immediate MP for Nyakach Peter Ochieng Odoyo while a group of youths alleged scrambling for campaign handout money. It occurred in Kamgan village area.

The outgoing former MP whose vehicle knocked down the victim narrowly escaped the lynching by the enraged villagers who attacked him baying for his blood.

The politician who is campaigning in defense of his parliamentary seat was, however, rescued by the police. But his car, an Isuzu Trooper, was extensively damaged during the Thursday evening incident.

The politician had picked up the seriously hurt victim and rushed him to the nearby Nyabondo Roman Catholic Mission Hospital, but the victim was pronounced dead on arrival.

Rowdy and enraged villagers pursued the former MP to the Hospital gate and tried in vain to reach the former MP who had taken refuge in a doctor's office and locked himself inside to escape the wrath of his pursuers.

Anti riot police quickly took position outside the hospital and dispersed the seemingly reluctant villagers. It was total chaos outside the small rural hospital and if it was not the quick police action which saved the situation threatened to get out of hand.

Odoyo remained holed in the hospital until late in the wee hours of the night when he was later escorted home by armed policemen.

The Nyanza Provincial police officer Mrs. Grace Kaindi confirmed the incident adding that they were looking for the former MP to record a statement about the fatal incident.

The incident came in the wake of another nasty incident, which took place in Kisii region last Wednesday during the ODM Presidential running mate Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi and his entourage were stoned by unruly youths.

The incident, which left the former vice-President visibly shaken, took place at the junction of Marani  -Nyakoe - Rioma - Kegogi road where he had stopped briefly to greet a huge crowd of people which hid gathered near Nyakegogi market by the roadside demanding that he address them.

Scores of the attackers were severely beaten up by the ODM security detail, police and Mudavadi's bodyguards. Some of the attackers were arrested while others were beaten to the ground and left unconscious.

ODM leaders in Gusii have since called upon the Police Commissioner to address upsurge of violence in the region.

ODM national treasurer Omingo Magara and the former PS in the Ministry of Agriculture James Ongwae who is an aspirant in Kitutu Chache Parliamentary seat bitterly complained that the harassment of ODM followers by suspected PNU supporters was worrying.

Magara himself had recorded a statement with the police earlier saying his life was in danger. He had received threats that he would be annihilated while campaigning in his former constituency in South Mugirango.

They alleged that those who had attempted to disrupt ODM rallies were well known people and wondered why no action was taken against them.

But police in Nyanza confirmed that suspects were already being held in custody at Nyakegoti Police station. But the ODM leaders insisted that the police were rather slow and seemed too lenient on the attackers.

Ends.
