300 DEAD FOLLOWING ROAD ACCIDENTS: IS THERE A DEVIL ON KENYAN ROADS?

Road traffic victims are taking more than half hospital beds in surgical wards. Deaths due to road accidents are expected to increase and to overtake deaths due to HIV or AIDS by 2010.

This is an alarming situation. Since september, Kenyan roads have been more unsafe than ever before. What is the cause? is it the bad roads? Is it politics? is it some sort of "sacrifice"? What happenned to the road safety programs and the "good" roads that this government constructed. A good government would make infrastructure one of its top priorities. How much of Anglo-Leasing money or corruption related losses would have helped Kenyans with better roads. Does that make "someone" responsible for these deaths of your relatives as well as mine?

Christmass is due precisely in 15 days. In the last 12 hours (per Monday's standard newspaper) Another 30 lives have been lost in various parts of the country. This figure added to the over 250 death cases since september, brings the death toll on our Kenyan highways close to 300.

Surely, death paints a grim picture of this festive season. Mark you, we'll be headed to the polls on the 27th. the very bad state of our roads & poor enforcement of traffic rules are major causes of road carnage. 75% of those who die in road accidents are a working class or have some income generating activity.

Please remember to pray for kenya as we close the year and esp. as we go to the polls.

Pray for grieving families who have lost their loved ones through road carnage, mungiki, Kuresoi & Mt. Elgon clashes, Political violence or gang violence. Kenyans deserve better and we can do better. We have a choice to make, and that choice begins with your vote among other things.

God bless Kenya.

Steve Aseno.
