WHAT NEXT? IS CHANGE IN KENYA INEVITABLE? 8 DAYS TO KENYAN ELECTIONS

Hallo!

We're really waiting to cellebrate come next week on friday, coz we are certain of victory .The last poll gave us a 10% lead, and buoyed by Githong'o's [the anti graft czar] sentiments that ''being ones tribesman doesn't make him a lesser thief..'' in reference to Kibaki's corrupt kikuyu cronies and compounded by Lucy Kibakis' last week slap to an MC at state house.......the public has totally lost trust in Kibaki....................... More to folow.....let's go to the polls first.....Good day.

Question of the day: (From 71 districts to almost 150) How urgent is the need for last minute district creations? How come this was never done earlier? Could this be a desperate measure as seen eg in Kibaki's trip to Kuria land ? (see what happened below)

Big Three turn on the charm as clock ticks
  By Standard Team

With only nine days to the polls, the Big Three are battling to make the last impression on the electorate, making repeat visits to areas they have campaigned in before — just to be sure.

They have all truly lived up to the adage in marketing and sales circles that goes, "There is always room for one more call."

Yesterday, President Kibaki (Party of National Unity), Mr Raila Odinga (ODM) and Mr Kalonzo Musyoka (ODM-K) were each making that important call in Nyanza, Eastern and Western.

Even though pollsters are unanimous that voters have already decided how to vote on December 27, the Big Three were leaving nothing to chance.

President Kibaki continued dangling the carrot, creating three new districts in Gucha, Kisii and Kuria as Raila re-awakened the corruption ghost.

Kalonzo, on the other hand, threw brickbats at the Government over a new report that chronicled an elaborate misuse of State resources in campaigns by the Party of National Unity.

However, Kibaki ran into turbulence that forced an 11th hour cancellation of his much-anticipated rally in Kisumu on Tuesday, which would have been back-to- back with one by Raila and his Pentagon team in the lakeshore town.

The President on Monday met a hostile reception in Kuria where he created a new District.

Nyanza Provincial Commissioner, Mr Paul Olando, announced that the trip that was to take the President to Nyando, Kisumu town and Rarieda was cancelled until further notice.

"The trip by the President has been put off due to some reasons and a new date will be announced later," said the PC, who declined to divulge the reason behind the sudden cancellation of the much-publicised trip. Later in the evening, the PPS released a new itinerary showing the President would on Tuesday be back in Ukambani, addressing rallies and roadside meetings in Kibwezi, Makueni and Machakos.

On Sunday, Raila told a mammoth rally in Kisumu that the President was free to campaign in the lakeshore town, "because I’ve also been to Othaya". He urged residents to accord the Head of State a warm welcome.

The cancellation, therefore, must have come as a complete shock.

President Kibaki was scheduled to commission the Sh12 billion Sondu-Miriu Hydro power plant in Nyakach and a Sh2 billion water project in Kisumu town before concluding his tour in Rarieda, the turf of Foreign Affairs minister, Mr Raphael Tuju.

In Kuria, the President had earlier declined to give in to the demands of the local residents to create a new district but quickly changed his mind after they became unruly and started shouting ODM slogans.

The President was caught in an embarrassing situation when he first declined to create a second district in the area, saying he would have to first study the proposal and carry out a census to ascertain if the area warranted a split.

But his remarks sparked an immediate uproar from the residents, who loudly demanded the district.

Shouts of "New district! New district!" rent the air after the President tried to explain his position".

Members of the public then started walking away even before he ended his speech at the stadium.

Demanded for a new district

Roads minister, Mr Simeon Nyachae, quickly rose from his seat, walked straight to the President and whispered a word to him but the President still stood his ground.

At this stage, planning Minister, Mr Henry Obwocha, went to President again and announced that the statistics on the district could be available within three days.

But President Kibaki, apparently annoyed by the turn of events said: "Kama mnasema hapana, which way will you go?" he said and appealed to the crowd to calm down and assured them he would only yield to their demands if they behaved maturely.

There was drama when the crowd continued to shout: "No district, Raila juu!" as East African Cooperation minister and former area MP, Dr Wilfred Machage, and former Assistant minister, Mr Shadrack Manga, escorted him to his car.

Some of the people could be heard shouting ‘Kibaki Tena! new district!’

Unable to bear the discontent, the President returned to the dais even as his press unit staff packed their public address system, to announce that he would now create the new district.

"I have now been briefed that the population of the district is about 70,000 and registered voters of 67,000. This means that there is a possibility of creating a new district.

"There will be now two districts in Kuria," he said without naming the new district.

The hundreds of residents at the rally then started chanting PNU slogans.

Last night, a PPS statement simply said: "Responding to wananchi’s request at Kehancha Stadium, the President announced the creation of a new district from the large Kuria District".

The President had earlier arrived in Kuria shortly after 2.30pm. He urged the residents to discard repugnant traditions and educate their children.

"Do not be contented with primary education. It is nothing. Give your children further education," he said.

The President appealed to the residents to vote for him on December 27, saying he had put better policies that would benefit the community.

Machage had earlier told the President that a few of his friends were out to rock the government from within.

"Mzee, kuna wazembe ndani ya serikali yako ambao wanataka kukuharibia serikali (Mzee, there are a few people in your government who are trying to ruin for you)," he said without elaborating.
