Point to ponder - Is this Jaluo's War

Mon, 14 Jan 2008 21:56:24 -0800 (PST)

The on going debates over the ‘post-election (??) violence’ witnessed in Kenya have made several assumptions which nobody seems to be trying to verify or at least to give some thoughts.  Here are some of the assumptions and my views on them are:

   1. That the elections were rigged in favour of Kibaki

Has this been proved beyond doubt?

   2. That the rigging (assuming there was rigging) was significant enough to change the ultimate results i.e. that with no rigging, Raila would have been a clear winner.

Raila in one of his media conferences guessed at a figure of 200,000 as being the number of illegal votes counted in favour of Kibaki. If this were taken away from the votes attributed to Kibaki, we would still have no clear winner

   3. That absolutely no rigging was done  in favour of Raila

Is this true? Consider in particular the alleged high voter turn-out of over 90% in one of the constituencies in ODM strongholds and claims by PNU agents of being locked out of polling stations and counting halls.

   4. That the post-election violence was spontaneous and a direct result of a Kibaki win and especially due to the alleged rigging in favour of Kibaki

Are you convinced that this is true considering the all too well organised ‘ethnic cleansing’ in Rift Valley?  Can you be sure that these were spontaneous in-the-heat-of-the-moment uncoordinated acts of violence?

I suspect a ‘leader’ from Rift Valley knows much more than he is telling!! And more, that this leader had planned the whole thing whichever way the election might have gone . . .

And us Jaluo’s ? Unwitting collaborators fighting somebody else’s battles.

Being used to confuse issues to give those battles a national outlook. We burnt down our own city, our Kibuye Market, our own means of lively hood and now we suffer.
